The History of AT&T Center
Formerly known as the SBC Center, the AT&T Center is one of San Antonio’s landmarks. This arena was built as a need for the San Antonio Spurs, who used to use the HemisFair Arena. Due to the small capacity and obsolescence of the facility, the club needed a new location and a more suitable arena for their matches.
Therefore, the Spurs continued playing their matches in the Alamodome from 1993 to 2000. Because it was primarily planned as a soccer facility, the Alamodome did not meet the expectations of the club and the fans. So, the San Antonio Spurs needed a new place to play their matches.
AT&T Center began construction in 2000 and was completed in 2002. The total amount spent on the arena was 186 million dollars. The money was provided by public and private funds.
The arena was officially opened on October 18, 2002, with a concert by George Strait. Since then, this arena has hosted many basketball games, concerts, and sporting events.
