The History of Wells Fargo Center
The arena was built in 1996 for a cost of $206 million, primarily financed by private sources, on the site of John F. Kennedy Stadium. The structure is located in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex’s southwest corner.
Before it was built, the intended arena’s working name was “The Spectrum II”. This name was considered as an homage to the previously demolished home arena of the 76ers – The Spectrum – which the Wells Fargo Center Was built to replace.
First Union Bank acquired the naming rights in a 1998 transaction, and Wachovia Bank acquired them in a 2003 merger with First Union.
Philadelphians affectionately referred to it as the “F.U. Center” while it was still known by the name First Union. As a result, the “First Union National Center” was considered as a name change.
However, the arena was given the name CoreStates Bank Arena. CoreStates Bank agreed to pay $40 million over 21 years in exchange for the naming rights. Since 2010, the arena has been known as the Wells Fargo Center.

Wells Fargo Center advises against buying tickets from scalpers or unauthorized platforms. The tickets from these sources are often counterfeit or stolen, so they won’t be honored inside the venue.
