The History of Golden 1 Center
Ideas for a modern arena started in 2012. The Maloof family, who owned shares in the Sacramento Kings, wanted to build an arena downtown where the Kings would play their games.
The idea was realized in 2014 when Vivek Ranadivé bought the majority shares in the club and concluded an agreement with the city authorities to construct a modern sports arena.
The arena’s construction began on October 29, 2014, costing $507 million. The City of Sacramento would contribute $223 million of the amount, while the Sacramento Kings would contribute $284 million.
In the end, the final total exceeded the projected amount due to the relocation of seats and additional features in the arena. Thus, the construction cost of Golden 1 Arena was $534.6 million.
Design
When the Golden 1 is mentioned, one thinks of this facility’s unique design and sustainability. The architects’ goal was to build a building reflecting the colors and spirit of California and Sacramento. Therefore, the architects used regional materials such as glass, recycled aluminum, and FSC-certified wood.
Moreover, the roof is composed of solar panels that generate 1.2 megawatts. Thus, the Golden 1 Arena is one of the few areas that use renewable energy.
Naming the arena
Golden 1 Credit Union owns the naming rights to the arena. It acquired the arena’s naming rights for $120 million on June 16, 2015.
