Football – it’s more than just a game. It’s a collective breath held in suspense, a shared moment of joy or disappointment, a universal language bridging cultures and continents.
Yet, as every avid football fan knows, it’s also a realm of statistics.
An intriguing aspect of this beloved sport is how markedly a team’s performance can change when playing on their home ground versus in an away match.
Today, we are going to delve into this very phenomenon, examining a decade’s worth of data from the English Premier League (EPL) and English Football League (EFL) – Championship, League One, and League Two.
Our research includes all clubs that have played at least 38 matches away from home over the past ten seasons, thus encapsulating data across multiple seasons and leagues.
The average away win percentage across these teams is 31.09%, but as we’ll see, this ‘average’ figure hides a wealth of differences.

Unpredictability at Its Best
What this data underscores is the inherent unpredictability of football, especially when it comes to away games.
A variety of factors can influence a team’s away performance, including the distance travelled, the local climate, the crowd’s size and fervor, and even the team’s mental preparation.
These elements combine to create an often insurmountable hurdle, even for teams that dominate on their home turf.
Why Does A Team’s Away Form Matter?
Why should we care about away win percentages?
In football, every point counts, and as every seasoned fan knows, championships are often won or lost based on a team’s performance away from home.
An ability to ‘win ugly’ on a rainy night away from home can be just as crucial to a club’s success as their ability to dominate in front of their home fans.
Moreover, from a fan perspective, following your team to an away match often involves significant dedication, time, and expense.
There’s a certain thrill in seeing your team triumph in the face of adversity, making those hard-fought away victories all the sweeter.
Wrapping Up
This analysis offers a fascinating insight into English football’s home-away dynamics over the past decade.
While it’s clear that some teams have mastered the art of winning on the road, others continue to grapple with the away-game challenge. As we move forward, it’ll be interesting to see how these statistics evolve and which teams can turn their away game fortunes around.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan, a casual viewer, or an avid statistician, one thing’s for certain: the beautiful game continues to captivate and surprise us, one match at a time.
Methodology
The data for this study was meticulously compiled to provide an in-depth analysis of the away form of English Football teams. Our process of data collection and analysis was thorough and adhered to specific criteria, as detailed below:
Data Collection: All relevant data was primarily sourced from FootyStats, a leading online platform for football statistics. We focused on data related to Away Matches for each team – specifically, the total number of matches played and the number of those matches won on away grounds across the past 10 seasons. This analysis included all teams that participated in the English Premier League (EPL) and English Football League (EFL) during this period.
Data Processing: Upon collecting the raw data, we conducted a detailed analysis by calculating the Away Win Percentage for each team. This percentage was computed by dividing the total number of Away Wins by the total number of Away Matches played and then multiplying the result by 100. This calculation provided a clear percentage figure that reflects the success rate of each team in away matches.
Inclusion Criteria: It is worth noting that our study only included teams that had played a minimum of 38 away matches – the equivalent of at least two seasons in the EPL and EFL combined. This minimum match requirement ensured that the teams included in the study had a substantial amount of data available for a reliable analysis.
Data Ranking: After calculating the Away Win Percentage for each eligible team, we ranked the teams based on this percentage, from highest to lowest. This ranking process allowed us to identify the teams with the best and worst away form over the past 10 seasons.
By adhering to this methodology, we ensured a robust and systematic approach to analysing the away form of English Football teams.
However, it’s important to bear in mind that football performance can be influenced by a wide range of factors, and while our study provides valuable insights, it does not capture all aspects of the game.
