The History of Scotiabank Arena
The beginnings of construction
The facility was initially planned as The Postal Delivery Building. The Federal Government commissioned this facility due to Toronto’s rapidly growing population.
The facility began construction in 1938 and was designed by architect Charles Dolphin. The construction was completed in 1940, but due to the Second World War, it was assigned to the Department of National Defense.
The period after the Second World War
After the war ended, the Department of National Defense gave the facility to Canada Post. To adapt the space for its purposes, Canada Post made certain modifications to the facility.
Such modifications consisted of installing the necessary machinery to sort the mail. Moreover, certain additions were made in the northeastern part of the building. Such buildings were intended for administrative offices and a cafeteria for the facility’s employees. These construction works ended in 1948.
In the 1970s, Canada Post encountered a problem related to the mechanization and interior of the facility. Namely, most mechanization needed to be updated, while the facility needed renovation. This renovation and replacement of outdated equipment were too much of a burden for Canada Post, so it decided to move to a new facility on Eastern Avenue. With that, the building remained abandoned.
The 1980s and the expansion of the real estate market
In the 1980s, the real estate market began to popularize, and Toronto began to resemble a modern city with skyscrapers and modern architecture. The Canada Post building was purchased by Bramalea Limited and Trizec, real estate developers, during this period.
Their goal was to renovate the building and use it for residential, business, and retail space. The onset of the recession in the early 1990s and numerous financial problems forced Bramalea Limited and Trizec to return the facility to Canada Post. Thus, the building remained unrenovated and, again, abandoned.
Founding of the Toronto Raptors
In 1993, the NBA decided to expand the league into Canada. For this purpose, the Toronto Raptors proved to be the most serious candidates. However, as a condition for inclusion in the league, the NBA requested conditions that included the arena itself.
Namely, the Toronto Raptors needed an arena easily accessible by public transportation or the subway to be in a downtown area and near the corporate core. In that way, fans would have easier access to the arena; on the other hand, the arena would attract many business people to invest in the team.
For this purpose, several facilities were considered, such as Exhibition Place, North York Centre, Bay & Dundas, Bay & Wellesley, and Canada Post building. Of all these buildings, the Canada Post building was selected as the most appropriate and accessible. With that, this building was bought for $60 million, which started the restoration of the building and its modernization and adaptation.
The renovation and the first matches
The renovation and adaptation were carried out in order to preserve the original reliefs of the building and to build a new part over the existing one. For this purpose, the eastern and southern elevations were renovated, and the original reliefs of the building were restored. In addition, the roof was built 40 feet above the original structure and had a flat hangar look. This approach allowed the building to have better acoustics and sound insulation.
All works related to conservation and restoration ended in 1998. Thus, the first hockey and basketball games were held in February 1999.
The facility was known for a long time under the name Air Canada Center until 2018. In 2018, the Air Canada Center was renamed Scotiabank Arena. Maple Leaf & Entertainment and Scotiabank signed a 20-year contract worth $800 million.
