MARTA

The History of Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which cost more than $1.5 billion and debuted on August 26, 2017, is the first building with a retractable roof that opens in eight separate sections from the center. 

On August 26, 2017, the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals played in a preseason game to mark the stadium’s official opening. It has a camera-lens-shaped retractable roof that can be opened in less than 10 minutes. 

The roof is made of eight sections with 1,600 retractable “petals” supported by three-layered cushions of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) shaped like falcons’ wings. The roof can open in 10-12 minutes, much faster than other stadiums around the country.
